Daily encouragement as you follow His path

Be a Blessing!

When God blesses you, He wants you to pass it on.  If you hoard your blessings, then you are being selfish.  A spirit of selfishness is not of God.  A blessing is only truly a blessing if it helps you help someone else.  Remember blessings flow.  Don’t cause a blocking of future blessings because you are holding onto something you are supposed to give away.  Open your heart and hands so that you are able to give as well as receive.

Keep Your Eyes (And Mind) on the Prize!

Sometimes life feels like an uphill battle.  You keep marching up and getting pushed back down the same side of the mountain.  You feel like you’ll never reach the top.  Today, pray for patience and faith to trust the process.  Keep your eyes and mind focused on the goal, whatever that goal may be.  Deal with distractions swiftly and deliberately.  Don’t let them side track you and zap you of valuable energy you need to get to the top.  Ignore negative comments and criticisms.  They aren’t worthy of your energy either.  Concentrate with your whole being on where you are going and before you know it…you’ll be at your destination.

To Whom Do You Listen?

Remember how we used to have to adjust the radio knob just so and do gymnastics with the antenna before radios had digital tuners?  We turned into acrobats just to listen to our favorite stations.  Today, do whatever you have to do so that you can hear what God is trying to say to you.

Nature vs. Nurture

There is an age-old debate regarding human development, specifically intelligence.  Some scientists argue that the acquisition of knowledge in humans is more closely correlated with environment than with genetics.  They propose that any human can learn under the right environmental conditions regardless of genetic make up.  Other scientists claim that even in optimal conditions, humans will only learn to the extent of their abilities as defined by their DNA codes.   In my humble opinion, both are valid arguments.  We can even take this debate a step further and apply it to our thinking.  By nature, we tend to focus on negative events.  Often, we replay those scenarios over and over in our minds sometimes years after the event has actually occurred.  We must deliberately think positive.  This can be done by surrounding ourselves with positive influences.  We have to be mindful of the kinds of books we read, the music we listen to, and the shows we watch on TV.  Guarding your mind from the negativity available on the internet is important also.   The types of thoughts we allow in our mind don’t have to be the topic of debate.  We can choose to override nature and nurture positive thoughts by filling our environment with prayer and spending time reading God’s word.

It’s Getting Easier

Today I noticed that I felt relaxed and peaceful for no particular reason.  My circumstances haven’t changed.  There are still some things about my life that  bother me.  I haven’t won the lottery and no one from Publisher’s Clearinghouse has knocked on the door.  Money is not the most important thing, but having a little more these days sure would help!  I really believe the change in my mental state is due to changing the way I think.  I have really tried to focus on keeping my thoughts and actions positive.  Some days have been better than others, but I keep striving to maintain control of what I think about.   Everyday it gets a little easier and I find that I have to redirect my thoughts less frequently.  It was really nice to be able to go about my day with an internal calm that I know comes from keeping my mind on Him.

Thoughts of Worship

Recently, my small group lesson at church was about worship.  One of the definitions of worship given during the lesson related worship to objects or activities on which we focus.  In other words, we worship things that we think about the most.  I got a little nervous because I could quickly name several things that consume my thoughts during any given day.  My list is below.  What would be on your list?

1.  money – saving and earning more

2.  family

3.  career

Note:  If we make God a part of these thoughts and ask for his guidance in each of these areas, then we are worshipping him instead of things.

Every thought we think is creating our future.

I Think I Can, I Think I Can

If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.

This Henry Ford quote puts into words why controlling our thoughts is so vital to our health – spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially.  I love this quote because it reminds me that although I may not be the smartest or the strongest, I can still prevail if I have the right frame of mind.  If I keep my mind fixed on the things of God, then the battle is won.  Of course, the battle was never ours in the first place.  But, I’ll save that for another post…

Like Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

Yesterday, I really struggled to keep my thoughts positive.  I felt very drained and defeated.  After work, I went home and did everything I had to do.  Then, I retreated from my hard day by crawling into bed early.

This morning, I started my day by acknowledging God in all His awesomeness and recognizing His power.  I talked to Him specifically about my current struggles and asked Him to help me because I don’t have the strength or discipline to do it myself.  Or, it would already be done.  On my drive to work, He proceeded tp speak to me through the music on the radio.  Every song’s message was the same – just trust in the Lord.

It is raining today, but for just the length of my commute the sun peeked through the clouds to light my way.  Our thoughts can do the same thing for us.  They can be a source of light in the darkness or they can make dark clouds seem ever more ominous and scary.  The choice is ours.

I have found that my biggest struggle with my thoughts comes from within instead of from other people or circumstances.  I am my own worst enemy when it comes to planting negative thoughts in my mind.  Too often I find that I am dwelling on something from the past or something that might happen in the future.  The past cannot be changed and we don’t know what the future holds, so I am basically just wasting my time and brain power.  During the month of January I hope to retrain my thought patterns to focus solely on today.  Every second that ticks by is another moment of my life slipping away.  I cannot afford to throw away precious time when I have no clue how much time I have left.  I vow to stay in the moment and to keep my thoughts on God.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Isaiah 26:3 KJV
